The importance of promoting cooperation in information technologies for developing telecommunication regulatory cooperation and for creating a healthy e-commerce environment was underlined at the recent Japan-EU summit in Tokyo. Yoshiro Mori, Prime Minister of Japan, and Jacques Chirac, current President of the European Council assisted by Council Secretary General Javier Solana and Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission welcomed the organisation of forthcoming events bringing together European and Japanese IT companies. These will be held during the Euro-Japanese Information Technology month being held in Japan during October. Summit members also expressed their satisfaction of the conclusions of the fourth Japan-EU science and technology forum held recently in Lisbon, where it was decided to explore future cooperation through three workshops on superconductor materials, high-speed communication networks and infectious diseases, to be held in 2001. Japanese and EU leaders said they hoped these initiatives would lead to wider cooperation in the entire field of science and technology.
