The Commission of the European Communities invites proposals for research and technology projects in the context of the specific programme of RTD in the field of biotechnology (BIOTECH, 1990-1994). The outline workprogramme for this third call is as follows: Area 1, Molecular approaches: - Protein structure and function (protein engineering of lipases, carbohydrate-active enzymes); - Expression of genes in animal cell lines of practical importance for the production of pharmaceutical products. Area 2. Cellular and organism approaches: - Cellular regeneration, reproduction and development in farm animals (contributions to the mapping of the pig genome); - Metabolism of microbes (essential physiological traits of lactic acid bacteria). Area 3. Ecology and population biology: - Ecological implications of biotechnology (high resolution molecular methods for the rapid identification of microorganisms, establishment of phytopathogens in the rhizosphere of economically important crops). Proposals may be submitted by interested legal entities (enterprises, research institutions and universities) located in the Community or, under certain special conditions, in other countries. Each project must include at least two contractors in two different Member states. A workprogramme has been drawn up setting out the detailed objectives and types of projects and the financial arrangements to be made for them. Research areas and topics will be addressed, in general, in shared-cost research and technological development projects, towards which the Communities financial contribution will normally not exceed 50% of total costs, the remainder to be provided by the partners. In the case of universities and similar institutions, the Community may bear up to 100% of the additional costs. Detailed information on submission of proposals and the contract that will be established with successful proposers, together with background material on the research topics, is available on request. All correspondence concerning this call should be sent to: Commission of the European Communities DG XII, Directorate E Ref: Biotechnology call for proposals 200 rue de la Loi B-1049 Brussels Tel. +32-2-2950361; Fax +32-2-2955365
