The Joint Research Centre is inviting tenders for a study on in-vitro cellular biotransformation of metal compounds. The work is required by the Institute for health and consumer protection's validation of biomedical testing methods unit (ECVAM). ECVAM's goal is to promote the scientific and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods which are of importance to the biosciences and which reduce, refine and replace the use of laboratory animals. Metal toxicity and carcinogenicity are areas of interest to ECVAM, particularly in integrating the aspects of toxicity of inorganic compounds with current ECVAM activities related to test development and validation studies. ECVAM is now calling for tenders for an evaluation of the chemical form(s) (oxidation state and binding with organic ligands) of metal in cell culture media and cells/cell lines for the optimisation of metal toxicity testing and the understanding of mechanism(s) of metal toxicity.
