An excellent response was received to the second call for proposals in the context of Linguistic Research and Engineering (LRE), Area Six of the specific programme for Community RTD in the field of telematic systems in areas of general interest (1990-1994). It was expected that the call, published in OJ No C 259 of 8.10.1992 (closing date 11.1.1993) would be followed by a further call for proposals early in 1994. However, the call was so successful, in terms of the quantity and quality of proposals received, that it is now considered very unlikely that any further calls will be forthcoming under the current phase of the programme. Areas covered included: - Research aimed at the improvement of the scientific basis of linguistic technologies; - Creation of common methods, tools and linguistic resources; - Pilot and demonstration projects. It was specified that the domains set out in the work programme were not limitative, and proposers were invited to suggest and motivate additional RTD themes and topics relevant to the linguistic research and engineering area. The call resulted in the distribution of 2100 information packages to interested parties, followed by the reception of 81 proposals considered to be valid. The selection procedure short-listed 24 of these, and 16 were eventually retained for funding. These projects involve a total of 90 project partners and represent an estimated 2000 man-months of RTD work in the Community.
