Foundations for ongoing contact and collaboration between the EU and South Africa in the sphere of women in science were laid recently when Nicole Dewandre, head of sector for women in science in the Commission's Research DG, visited South Africa for talks with her South African counterparts. Ms Dewandre was in South Africa from 15 until 20 October, and was joined by Eryl McNally, MEP and author of the European parliament's report on Women and Science. Both participated in discussions at the South African department of arts, culture, science and technology, as well as the national research foundation, responsible for South Africa's women in research programme. Ms Dewandre and Ms McNally also met with South Africa's deputy minister of arts, culture, science and technology. Reciprocal visits by South African officials to Europe are planned for 2001. South African researchers will also be submitting proposals for participation in the Fifth Framework programme's 'accompanying measures' initiatives on women and science, which will be introduced as a theme for South Africa's bilateral science and technology co-operation with the EU Member States.
