EUFORES urges further research into renewable energy
EUFORES, the European forum for renewable energy, is urging the European Commission to explore further the use of alternatives to petroleum based products Europe's dependence on petroleum has become particularly visible recently, with several European countries being brought to a standstill following protests over fuel prices. In response to this, the Commission recently announced that its joint research project with German car manufacturer, Volkswagen should produce a car capable of travelling 100km on one litre of fuel by 2004. But Eryl McNally, president of EUFORES and MEP has called for even more research into areas such as bio-diesels and fuel cells which could alleviate fuel dependence. 'We have become, as everyone knows, far too dependent on oil, particularly in the realm of transport,' says Mrs McNally said. 'One day we will look back upon our profligacy with astonishment. We have put ourselves in a position of dependency upon countries outside Europe, some of which are far from stable.'
