On 30 June 1993, the European Commission approved the German State aid programme "Gesundheitsforschung 2000" for research in the health sector. Approximately 98% of the total budget (ECU 400 million) will be allocated to universities and public research institutes participating in fundamental research in all areas of the health domain. The remainder of the budget, ECU 7.5 million, will be made available to the private sector for research carried out on a project basis, with the projects to be chosen during the programme. These projects can be partly basic and partly applied research but may not be uniquely applied research. Financial support for these projects may vary between 30 and 50% of total costs.
