The European Parliament's Directorate-General for Research, Directorate B, calls for tenders, applications and expressions of interest under the STOA (Scientific and Technical Options Assessment) programme. 1. Tenders - STOA Fellow contracts: Tenders are invited for contracts to supply research services to the European Parliament in the field of scientific and technical options assessment, in execution of the programmes, projects and operations included in the annual STOA workplan under the STOA Fellowship scheme for individual researchers qualified to at least PhD level or equivalent. These are short-term contracts to be executed at one of the three places of work of the institution (Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Brussels). STOA Fellows of professorial status receive the designation STOA Senior Fellow. It is anticipated that at least two or three contracts will be available with a starting date in September or October 1993. The 1993 workplan is divided into the following areas: Ecology; energy; medical science; research policy and innovation; and technology. Areas of foreseen early need include industry/technology policy, agriculture/soil science, energy policy, marine sciences, biotechnology. 2. Call for applications - STOA scholarships: Applications for STOA scholarships are invited from young researchers qualified to at least the level of a university first degree (or equivalent) in a science, engineering or related subject, but not having attained a PhD. Requests for information and applications may be made at any time. However, between the date of publication of the present announcement and that of the next call for candidatures, in 1994, there are expected to be two selection procedures, one in the autumn of 1993 and the next early in 1994. Candidates wishing to be taken into consideration in the autumn 1993 selection should post their applications no later than 15 September. 3. Call for expressions of interest - Project contractors, experts: Research organizations willing to cooperate in STOA projects in 1993-1994 are invited to make expressions of interest in writing to the given address. STOA maintains a database of potential contractors and sub-contractors which it uses when organizing restricted calls for tender in connection with projects in its annual workplan. Expressions of interest should be accompanied by supporting literature concerning the competencies and experience of the organization concerned. In addition, individual experts who would be willing to take part in STOA workshops on an expenses-only basis are invited to submit expressions of interest. Organizations and individuals who expressed interest under the categories described in the present paragraph in response to the STOA announcement published in Official Journal C 288 of 6.11.1992 will be deemed to have maintained their interest, and will be retained in the database unless they request the contrary. There is no deadline for expressions of interest under this heading. It should be noted in general that expressions of interest are welcome at any time from suitably qualified individuals wishing to undertake unremunerated study visits in the STOA team for limited periods as Visiting Fellows or Visiting Scholars. Acceptance is at the discretion of STOA. All correspondence should be addressed to: European Parliament Directorate B, Directorate-General for Research Attn. Mr. M. Silvestro, Director Schuman 6/14 L-2929 Luxembourg
