A project aimed at reducing the energy demand of universities in Europe and Israel has been launched by BEO (Biologie, Energie, Okologie), from the Jülich Research Centre under the COPERNICUS sub-section of the Fifth Framework programme's International Cooperation Programme. Jülich Research Centre is the German member of OPET (organisations for the promotion of energy technologies). The goal of the initiative is to encourage the sharing of knowledge on the sustainable use of energy at universities and to assist teachers, researchers, students and university administrators to make informed decisions which contribute to improved energy efficiency at university level. Project coordinators perceive universities as important players in energy efficiency promotion and hence in the battle to meet the carbon dioxide reduction targets set out in the Kyoto Protocol. Measures aimed at reducing energy consumption have already been introduced by many universities. Those interested in sharing success stories can download a case template from the address below.
