Research fellowships at the Zukunftskolleg

EU funding is supporting a fellowship programme for international researchers at Germany's University of Konstanz. The project expects to offer 48 two-year postdoctoral fellowships and 26 five-year positions for experienced researchers.

The Zukunftskolleg is a research institute at the University of Konstanz, Germany, offering attractive research fellowships to international researchers. The original scheme was discontinued in 2012, but replaced that year with an expanded alternative. The EU-funded project 'Zukunftskolleg incoming fellowship programme' (ZIF-MARIE-CURIE) manages the new scheme to create an innovative and interdisciplinary research environment. As of 2012, two kinds of fellowships were offered: five-year positions for experienced researchers, and two-year equivalents for postdoctoral researchers. Both types of fellowships were available to applicants outside Germany. Other goals include fostering cross-disciplinary and inter-generational dialogue, and developing the careers of young researchers. The project runs from mid-2012 to mid-2017. The fellowships offer several unusual advantages, including a mentorship programme and opportunities for scientific retreats, and potential for top-up funding. In addition, the programme helps to develop leadership and management skills. Thus, candidates for the senior researcher fellowships are required to apply for a minimum of EUR 50 000 in external funding. ZIF-MARIE-CURIE activities and efforts will lead to enhancement of the skills of selected fellows and of the research environment at the Zukunftskolleg.
