EU-Canada cooperation in satellite navigation received a boost at the EU-Canada summit in Ottawa on 19 December. Both parties recognised the huge potential of extending this cooperation to the future phases of the European GALILEO programme in areas such as creating a regional service, search and rescue activities and industrial cooperation. Delegates from the EU and from Canada agreed that such cooperation needs to take due account of rules concerning intellectual property and the security of the system Representatives agreed to meet early in 2001 in order to explore the scope of an agreement that shall define and guide future Canadian participation in the development and validation phase of GALILEO.
