As part of an initiative to improve the welfare of pigs, the European Commission intends to request further scientific advice. The Commission presented its proposal on new EC legislation to improve the welfare of pigs at the Agriculture Council on 29 January. Responding to the proposal, Sweden's Minister for Agriculture, Margareta Winberg, speaking in her capacity as President of the Agricultural Council outlined the importance of animal welfare for the Swedish Presidency. 'The Commission proposal concerning changes to the Council Directive relating to the welfare of pigs is a step in the right direction, and I hope that work on the proposal will proceed fast so that we can soon decide on new, better regulations for the animals,' said Ms Winberg.
