Proposed SPRINT extension
A Commission proposal for a Council Decision amending Decision 89/286/EEC on the implementation at Community level of the main phase off the Strategic Programme for Innovation and Technology Transfer (1989-1993 SPRINT programme) was submitted by the Commission to the Council on 6 July 1993. The proposed Decision will extend the SPRINT programme to 31 December 1994. The original Decision adopting the main phase of SPRINT (Decision 89/286/EEC of 17.4.1989) is therefore, under the proposition, to be amended in order to adopt the programme for a period of six years as from 1 January 1989. The proposal notes that a panel of experts has carried out an evaluation of the results achieved by the programme during a period of 30 months, and confirms the appositeness and main characteristics of the programme, calling for its extension and making recommendations concerning the direction of certain SPRINT measures. The proposal further notes that the actions undertaken in the framework of the SPRINT programme, whose effects can only be perceived on the medium to long term, need to be continued and reinforced in order to contribute to the initiative to relaunch growth, to ensure coherence with other Community instruments promoting innovation and technology diffusion, and to prepare the integration of SPRINT into the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development.
