Undergraduates can further their scientific studies with the help of a monetary prize if they enter the Archimedes prize organised under the European Union's Fifth Framework programme. Those that show scientific excellence and European added value within the pre-determined fields could walk away with as much as 50,000 euro, which can be put towards a scientific project of the applicant's choice. The four selected areas for this year's competition are the following: - concepts to aid disabled people - desertification and drought - mathematical modelling for social and economic sciences - new medicines from natural resources There will be three first, second and third prizes. As well as the monetary awards, honorary distinctions will be given to the best science projects. Applications can be made on an individual or group basis. The final date for submitting the application form is 31 July.
