CORDIS - connected with Europe
CORDIS, the European Community's research and development information service, has established a direct connection to the Luxembourg research and education network, RESTENA, and through this with all pan-European research and education networks via the TEN-155 network. The move will mean that European researchers will be able to have rapid access to CORDIS' ten databases and 30,000 web pages, with information available at a connection speed of 4 Mbps (megabytes per second). Peter Finch of the European Commission claimed that European academic researchers form a central part of the European research effort and this move should assist them. 'Providing faster Internet for researchers is a priority in the eEurope action plan of the European Commission and this is a good example of how to use existing resources to ensure such achievements.' This was endorsed by Théo Duhautpas, director of RESTENA. 'We are very pleased to be able to implement this direct connectivity on behalf of European researchers. It is vital that networks dedicated to supporting research and development have high quality connectivity to an important site such as CORDIS, via RESTENA and the pan-European TEN-155 network,' he said.
