The European agency for safety and health at work (EASHW) has announced a call for proposals on provision and dissemination of best practices which reduce accident risks in SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) in the European Union. Some 5 million euro is available for the call, with grants for specific projects of 25,000 to 200,000 euros. SMEs and transnational projects involving them are particularly encouraged to apply. The call comes following a workshop hosted by the EASHW in cooperation with the Swedish presidency of the European Union in Bilbao, Spain on 24 and 25 April. It drew together European experts on the subject of safety at work and forms the first of several planned debates which will help in the preparation of strategic paper on the subject which the European Union plans to draw up by the beginning of 2002. At the end of the event, EASHW's director, Hans-Horst Konkolewsky, said: 'This workshop represents the first step towards a new strategy to tackle the challenges of health and safety at work on a European level.'
