The importance of integrating the Romanian aerospace industry within the overall framework of the European industry was emphasised at a meeting between the Romanian aerospace industry and the European Association of Aerospace Industries (AECMA), supported by the European Commission in Bucharest, Romania on 30 May. The conference was organised to discuss links between the aerospace industries in Romania and activities underway within the European Union. In his introductory remarks, Marian Ilie, representing the Secretary of State for the defence industry within the Ministry of industry and resources, stressed that the integration of the Romanian aerospace industry within the overall structure of the European industry is vital. He also highlighted the importance of establishing in depth contacts with high technology companies, and noted that participation in European research programmes provides the opportunity for companies to further develop their capabilities in core areas. Presentations from Commission, Joint Aviation Authority (JAA) and AECMA representatives underlined the need for Romania's aerospace community to join European organisations, particularly those involved in regulatory, standardisation and quality activities. Ms Bridget Czarnota, head of DG Enlargement's technical assistance information exchange (TAIEX) office also highlighted the importance for the Romanian industry of adapting to the legal and regulatory framework of the European Union, and stated that the industry must take its future in its own hands. As part of its integration process, the Romanian aerospace industry plans to join the AECMA activities next year. The Romanian aerospace industry today comprises of 15 companies and employs more than 10,000 people
