New RTD programme in the field of transport (EURET)
A first Community RTD programme in the field of transport (EURET) has been adopted by the Council for a three-year period with a budget of ECU 25 million (Council Decision 91/11/EEC of 21.12.1990). The general objectives are to improve the effectiveness and competitiveness of Community transport, to improve transport safety and working conditions and to reduce the harmful effects of transport on the environment. Priority research topics include: a Europe-wide system of reference for analysing and evaluating new road construction projects; the development and/or assessment of rail, maritime and air traffic management systems; economic, technical and human aspects of freight transport systems; evaluation of the safety of private cars towing trailers and of truck and trailer combinations. The various transport research projects being carried out in the framework of the COST programme will play an important complementary role to EURET's activities.
