Virtual reality workshop will influence RTD planning
The Telematics programme has issued under one cover a collection of papers and other written material resulting from the workshop "Virtual Reality: Toy and Tool" held in Brussels on 11 March 1993. The organizers note in their introduction that they wish to receive expressions of interest concerning the application of VR in telematics from European companies, institutions and individuals. The publication is intended to form the foundation of further work in areas within the Telematics programme (the specific programme of research and technological development in telematic systems in areas of general interest, 1990-1994). Community RTD in telematics encompasses seven sub-areas. Three of these, AIM (Advanced Informatics in Medicine), DELTA (Flexible and Distance Learning) and DRIVE (Road Transport Telematics) decided together to explore how the different techniques grouped under the title of "virtual reality" will influence future systems applications in the three areas and how this could and should influence the planning of RTD activities in these areas. Hence the workshop aimed to bring together the people and organizations in the virtual reality field, to reach an understanding of the present possibilities and limitations of the techniques involved, and finally to create a listing of possible domains in the three subprogrammes where the use of VR could be considered and should be further investigated. The participation of ESPRIT projects in the workshop ensured the coordination of European Community activities. Contributions include: A unified framework for VR and 3D interactive applications (Virtuality Builder 2, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology); Virtual Reality Research and Applications (University of London); VR with Silicon Graphics (Division Ltd.); Real-time Image Interaction in Flight Simulation (Hughes Rediffusion Simulation Ltd.); SCATIS, An ESPRIT Basic Research Project (Bochum University); The GLAD-IN-ART Consortium (ARTS Lab, Scuola Superiore S. Anna). In addition, individual contributions from participants are included in the form of topic papers together with other papers of interest. A list of participants and contact details is appended. Also presented are the minutes of the working groups established in each of the three telematics subprogrammes involved: Virtual Reality, Tool and Toy (DELTA), Virtual Reality in Health Care (AIM), and VR in Telematics for Transport (DRIVE).
