The European Commission is preparing two new Communications which will set out a clear legal framework and standards for online health information. The two 'eHealth' Communications, to be published in March 2002, will aim to ensure that users of health websites can be sure the information has been endorsed. The eHealth initiative will be part of the existing eEurope programme. The first of the Communications will address how eHealth practices are affected by existing legislation. This is a necessary step due to the rise of new activities such as distance contracting and data protection. The second will outline guidelines for the use of these sites. The Commission has established a mailbox for public feedback on the issue (address available below). A set of draft guidelines has already been drawn up.
