Thirteen EU/USA and six EU/Canada university cooperation projects have been selected for funding amounting to over two million euro in 2001. The selected projects cover a range of areas from architecture to social science, the environment and commerce. Cooperation will include the development of joint courses and student exchanges. Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Education and Culture, highlighted the importance of the move. 'As my colleague Chris Patten and myself stressed our recent communication on cooperation with third countries in higher education, our students, teachers and researchers do not derive sufficient benefit from international education and it is in our interests to open up our universities to the rest of the world. Our agreements with the USA and Canada are good examples of this,' she said.
