Romania contributes to atmospheric research
The MASIMBIRS (Estimation of atmospheric moisture at the air-sea interface on the Mediterranean and Black Sea using IR satellite data) project developed statistics-based tools for estimating near-surface moisture from geostationary satellite observations. The first approach was based on regression methods and used vertical profiles of temperature and humidity taken from satellite data and results from a regional model. The second focused on a look-up-table (LUT) procedure for estimating the statistical characteristics of the distribution of near-surface water. Thanks to the frequency of sampling and good resolution, these observations will provide added value by being applied on a daily timescale over the Mediterranean basin to studies of cyclonic activity, open-sea summer squalls and waterspouts. Results from the MASIMBIRS project will help support future geostationary satellite missions. The project will also help to build cooperation and raise the visibility of Romanian research institutes at the European level.
