The European Commission has announced a call for proposals for RTD actions under the specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration on 'Quality of life and management of living resources' (1998 - 2002). Those eligible to participate in indirect RTD actions under the specific programme are hereby invited to submit proposals for research and technological development projects, combined RTD/demonstration projects, thematic networks and concerted actions that address the following parts of the work programme: Key actions: Food, nutrition and health 1.1) Development of safe and flexible and new and/or improved manufacturing process and technologies. 1.2) Development of tests to detect and processes to eliminate infectious and toxic agents throughout the food chain. 1.3) Research into the role of food in promoting and sustaining health with respect to [...] and public health. Indicative budget available per activity: 39 million euro Environment and health All areas. Indicative budget available per activity: 32.1 million euro Sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry and integrated development of rural areas, including mountain areas. 5.1) New and sustainable system of production [...] health and welfare. 5.2) The integrated production and exploitation of biological material for non-food uses. 5.4) Support for common policies [...] basis for community legislation. 5.5) New tools and models for the integrated and sustainable development of rural and other relevant areas. Indicative budget available per activity: 17.4 million euro The ageing population 6.1) Age-related illnesses and health problems. 6.2) Basic process of physiological ageing. 6.3) Demographic and social policy aspects of population ageing. 6.4) Coping with functional limitations in old age. 6.5) Health and social care services to older people. Indicative budget available per activity: 52 million euro Research and technological development activities of a generic nature: 12) Bioethics. 13) Socio-economic evaluation of life sciences and health care technologies.
