A proposal for a Council Directive laying down the basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers of ionizing radiation (COM(93) 349) applies to: - The production, processing, handling, use, storage, placing on the market, exportation and disposal of radioactive substances; - The operation of electrical equipment emitting ionizing radiation and containing components operating at a potential of more than 5 kV; - Exposure to natural radiation at work (in uranium mines and in other specified workplaces). The proposal covers the maximum permissible doses compatible with adequate safety, the maximum permissible levels of exposure and contamination, and the fundamental principles governing the health surveillance of workers.
