A network created under the Growth programme of the Fifth Framework programme for research (FP5) is drawing up a strategy plan for future noise research that will support the preparation of a Commission Directive on the assessment and management of environmental noise. The CALM network will define the steps needed to reduce noise emissions in the EU from air traffic, road and rail transport, marine technologies and outdoor equipment. It will also identify links and gaps between current noise abatement technology and future EU goals for noise reduction and regulation. The strategy plan will be based on reports from noise working groups appointed by the Commission, in cooperation with research institutions, industry sectors and stakeholder organisations. The network brings together a wide range of players from six different Member States, including a research institute, an environment agency, a local council, an environment ministry, a university and a private company. The three-year project began on 1 October 2001 and is receiving 655,800 euro of financial support from the European Commission.
