Spanish research centre to become Community swine fever reference laboratory
Meeting in Brussels on 18 February, the Agriculture Council agreed on new measures to combat African swine fever, including the designation of the Valdeolmos research centre in Spain as a Community reference laboratory. The Spanish research centre was proposed in a Commission proposal for a Directive establishing the conditions for the control of African swine fever on account of its recognised international role in the research and diagnosis of African swine fever. The Agriculture ministers also agreed on procedures to be followed in the event of suspicion or confirmation of the disease, measures to prevent it spreading, the preparation of a diagnosis manual and preventative measures, all of which were outlined in the Commission proposal.
