Study contract for energy and climate - carbon sequestration
The Environment DG of the European Commission has issued a call for tenders for a study contract to explore the long-term effects of carbon dioxide capture and underground sequestration and draw recommendations for an EU policy on this issue. In the framework of the Energy supply working group of the European climate change programme, the issue of carbon dioxide capture and underground storage was examined. It was demonstrated that there are technically viable options, but that the costs still appear rather high - estimated at between 40 euro and 60 euro per tonne of carbon dioxide. There is a potential to reduce such costs. Where the carbon dioxide captured is used for enhanced recovery from an oil field or to produce ammonia or fertilisers, the cost-effectiveness of carbon dioxide capture and sequestration increases.
