The Environment DG of the European Commission has issued a call for tenders for a study contract to explore the long-term effects of carbon dioxide capture and underground sequestration and draw recommendations for an EU policy on this issue. In the framework of the Energy supply working group of the European climate change programme, the issue of carbon dioxide capture and underground storage was examined. It was demonstrated that there are technically viable options, but that the costs still appear rather high - estimated at between 40 euro and 60 euro per tonne of carbon dioxide. There is a potential to reduce such costs. Where the carbon dioxide captured is used for enhanced recovery from an oil field or to produce ammonia or fertilisers, the cost-effectiveness of carbon dioxide capture and sequestration increases. The contribution of this technology to emission reduction in the period until 2010 is likely to be very limited but could become more important in the long-term.For further information, please contact: European Commission Directorate-General Environment (DG ENV) Unit ENV.5 'Budget and finance' BU-5 00/120 Attn: Gail Kent B-1049 Brussels Fax: +32 2 299 4449 For administrative and financial matters, please contact: Tel: +32 2 296 0008 For technical matters, please contact: Tel: +32 2 295 7384
