Spain is to receive 30 million euro from the European investment bank (EIB) under the innovation 2002 initiative (i2i), aimed at promoting an economy based on knowledge and innovation. The Institute Catalá de Finances will receive the global loan, which will be used to finance innovative technological and audiovisual ventures undertaken by private enterprises in Catalonia. The i2i programme focuses on research and development, extension of information and communications technology networks, the development of entrepreneurship and human capital formation. This is the EIB's sixth global loan to the Institute Catalá de Finances aimed at enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of small and medium sized enterprises, but the first to focus on projects in the audiovisual sector. In addition to promoting innovative technology, the funds will be put towards the building of technology parks.
