A new prototype optical reflection sensor forms part of a sophisticated control system under development in a BRITE/EURAM project to improve the degree to which the paper-making process can be regulated and controlled. The new sensor will be among exhibits on display at the forthcoming Papex international conference and exhibition in Maastricht on 2-5 November 1993. By improving the accuracy with which the flocculation stage (at the heart of all paper-making) can be controlled, the team of scientists and engineers in the project hope to be able to enhance both product quality and the cost-effectiveness of paper-making operations. Partners in this project include The Netherlands Institute for Applied Research (TNO), Pira International of the UK, the Spanish Research Organization for Paper and Pulp (IPE) and the University of Madrid.
