The European Investment Bank (EIB) is lending Masaryk University in the Czech Republic 95 million euro for modernisation and expansion. Part of the loan will also be used for the acquisition of research equipment and state of the art teaching equipment. The investments will allow the university to teach a growing number of students, expand the range of courses and research activities and increase the quality of education, bringing Masaryk University closer to the level of the EU's best universities. Commenting on the loan, EIB vice president Wolfgang Roth said that it was 'in line with the objectives set by the Czech Republic's higher education strategy, which intends to raise the number of university students and increase quality of education and research.' He added that it is also in line with the EIB's Innovation 2000 initiative, 'which aims at building a European economy based on knowledge and innovation in both the present and future Member States of the EU.'
