EU citizens worried about global environment
Concern about the future of the environment remains high among European citizens, according to a Eurobarometer survey carried out in the 15 Member States to coincide with World Environment Day on 5 June. The survey shows that a majority of European citizens are worried about trends in areas such as climate change, health and wildlife protection. Some 7,500 citizens from throughout the EU were interviewed in April this year. EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström said: 'The signal from European citizens is crystal clear: they want politicians to do more locally and globally - to protect the environment and pave the way for genuinely sustainable development in the world.' The survey found that 89 per cent of those surveyed are worried about future trends in environment and health. 86 per cent are apprehensive about future use of natural resources and waste generation and 82 per cent are concerned about nature and wildlife. Some 72 per cent of respondents said they are concerned about climate change.
