The European Community and the United States of America are to begin an exploratory phase of cooperation in the field of higher education. The names of universities and higher education establishments selected to take part were announced on 18 October 1993. After evaluation by independent experts, 23 proposals for demonstration projects were chosen to receive aid under the initiative. These were submitted by groupings of higher education organizations, in each case including members in both the Community and the USA. The projects cover a variety of themes and involve a total of some 200 universities and teaching establishments in Europe and the USA. They are of particular common interest and promise to be equally rewarding for both American and Community participants. Topics include: - Environment and microbiology; - The protection of water tables as a world ecological problem; - Technology and international management; - Agriculture and agricultural policy in the European Community and in the United States; - Elaboration of a postgraduate study course in further education; - International marketing for SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises); - Comparative studies in immigration, ethnic identity and policy on refugees. Activities will comprise cooperation on student mobility (including participation in industrial training courses), mobility of teaching staff, the organization of common teaching programmes and seminars. Priority measures will target the mutual recognition of qualifications and the possible extension of the European "course points" system.
