Danish Prime Minister announces sustainable development and food safety as Presidency priorities
The Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has given an outline of his country's priorities during their six month EU Presidency, which begins on 1 July 2002. Enlargement will be Denmark's top priority, but the Presidency will also focus on sustainable development, food safety, safety and security and global responsibility. The final work programme for the Danish Presidency is not yet available as 'we owe it to the Spanish Presidency not to disturb their efforts to make as much progress as possible,' said Mr Fogh Rasmussen. Denmark will give priority to sustainable development in economic, social and environmental terms, said the Prime Minister. He also emphasised the importance of a strong and competitive European economy as a prerequisite for sustainable development. 'Food safety, from soil to table, is a very important task for the EU. We will put emphasis on this issue during the Danish Presidency,' said Mr Fogh Rasmussen. He finished by saying that the Danish government will work for a Presidency which is characterised by clear priorities, focused implementation and transparency.
