Technology companies looking to patent new innovations topped the list of patents in engineering technology in the UK last year, according to the results of a new study. Derwent information research found that Nokia Mobile phones and Philips Electronics came first and second in the tables for having filed the most patents. They were largely in the fields of telephone and data transmission systems, broadcasting, radio and line transmission systems and digital computers. 'The interesting trend that our analysis has uncovered is that in 2001, companies filing patents in the technology sectors dominated the UK league table. Despite a turbulent year for so many hi tech UK companies, it is clear that the big players are still investing in research and development,' said Vincent Cassidy, Derwent information's engineering and technology director. Other companies who featured in the top 10 include two automotive firms, Rover Group and Delphi technologies.
