The Haitian Revolution from a transatlantic angle
The Haitian Revolution is said to be the first and only successful slave revolution and one of the first anti-colonial revolutions in modern history. GOTH-NAR-HAITIAN-REV (Transatlantic Politics of Horror and Terror in Gothic Narratives of the Haitian Revolution, 1791-2011) was an EU-funded project that added a European perspective to this event. Researchers from various disciplines joined together to create a framework for the project. The Institute for Black Atlantic Research (IBAR) was set up. This provided a context for the Black Atlantic and also provided a supportive environment for training and mentorship. The training sessions analysed late 18th century and early 19th century British caricatures. Results were presented at several international conferences and a symposium as well as via the IBAR website. Project work and findings will help increase the competitiveness of the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of transatlantic studies and transatlantic modernity. Overall, new transnational knowledge regarding Haitian Revolutionary studies from European scholarship has been provided.
