OREGIN, an industrial organisation of European global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) players, has written to Loyola de Palacio, Commission Vice-President responsible for transport and energy, praising the way in which the Commission has supported the Galileo programme. Galileo will be Europe's first satellite navigation system. The letter precedes the December Council meeting, where ministers will decide on the content and implementation of Galileo Service levels. The decision will determine whether or not a specific business can be conceived in each particular field. 'We are pleased to express our gratitude for the way the programme is being managed by the Commission, we support your definition of the Galileo Services and confirm our willingness to support you for the subsequent programme phases,' writes Pascal Campagne, on behalf of OREGIN. OREGIN welcomes the Commission's proposal for open and commercial services. 'Enhanced performances, superior services and service guarantee should generate a considerable market in addition to what could be expected from GPS [global positioning system],' states the letter.
