From spring 2003, Austrian schoolchildren will be able to obtain additional information from their school books via the Internet. Under the 'Schulbuchextra' initiative, schools will continue to use old text books, while up to date information will be provided online, thus bringing eLearning to the classroom. All online content will be relevant for a particular text book. Following trials with over 100 online supplements in the spring, the initiative will be introduced nationwide in time for the next school year. Pupils will be provided with a special code in the school books allowing them access to the Schulbuchextra portal. The online content is likely to range from more detailed data to complementary information, exercises and animations, and from basic data to interactive content. The online content will be developed by teams of specialist authors and then approved by the Ministry of Education.
