Computer and mobile phone use among older Finns above EU average
A recent study shows that the use of the Internet and computers, as well as mobile phones, among older citizens in Finland, is above the EU average. The study was conducted by the European SeniorWatch Observatory and Inventory, in collaboration with Stakes, the national research and development centre for welfare and health in Finland, who surveyed Internet and mobile phone use by those aged 50 and over. The results show that 58 per cent of older Finns have used a computer and 35 per cent have surfed the Internet, which contrasts greatly to the EU average of 40 per cent and 22 per cent respectively. There is also a high rate of mobile phone use within this age group in Finland. According to the study, nearly 70 per cent have mobile phones, predominantly for safety purposes while the EU average for this age group is approximately 50 per cent. A surprising 80 per cent of older Finns have also sent or received a text message, which is twice the EU average. The results of the studies showed that Finns in this age group like to use the Internet for e-mailing and for studying or searching for details about products and services available to them.
