The European Commission is to invite observations from Edith Cresson, the former Commissioner for Research, Innovation, Education, Training and Youth, on allegations that she acted improperly when a Member of the Commission. The Commission decided to invite comments from Ms Cresson in order to 'clarify issues' and to ensure her rights of natural justice. Ms Cresson's response will be 'thoroughly considered by the Commission before any decision is taken regarding possible further action,' says a Commission statement. Ms Cresson was a Member of the Commission from 1995 until 1999, when the whole college of Commissioners stood down following allegations of favouritism by the Research Commissioner.
