The Council of the European Union, at its meeting of 13 December 1993 (the Ministers of Health of the Member States meeting within the Council), congratulated the Commission on its proposal concerning the new Framework for Action in public health stemming from provisions included in the Maastricht Treaty. This document received strong approval from a number of the Ministers. The Council will proceed to an in-depth discussion early in 1994. A Commission report on the effectiveness of Community action undertaken in the context of the "Europe against Cancer" programme (COM(93) 93) was also on the Council agenda of 13 December. After discussion of this report, the Council adopted a resolution on future guidelines for action in this area. The Commission will be bringing forward a proposal, in the near future, for a continuation of Community action against cancer under the new public health framework. A Commission proposal to extend the "Europe against AIDS" programme (1991-1993) to the end of 1994, in order to avoid an interruption of effort in this area, was welcomed by the Council. The sum of ECU 9 million has been foreseen in the 1994 budget for this proposal. The Council also agreed in principle on the establishment of an epidemiological network in the Community. The Commission is to take this matter forward in the context of the Framework for Action in the field of public health.
