The Commission has raised no objections to the granting of state aid to implement the German RTD scheme "Microsystemtechnik 1994-1999. The main emphasis of the programme is to support basic industrial research into electronic microsystems, in which sensors, signal processing units and actuators are combined. Some of the projects supported should, in the medium term, improve the understanding of microsystems, laying the foundations for the development of new functions that will in the long term be of use in the field of public welfare, including health care, environmental protection and transport infrastructure. Other projects are aimed at developing advanced prototype microsystem designs and at developing the standard components required in such systems plus the technologies for producing them, where these are not yet available. The scheme (State Aid No N539/93) provides financial support of up to 78% for basic industrial research and up to 22% in the case of applied RTD. The beneficiaries are enterprises as well as scientific institutions. An overall budget in the region of ECU 134 million covers the six years of the scheme.
