The first ever winners of the eEurope awards for eHealth were announced on 22 May in the presence of European Commissioners and 33 ministers for health. The prize winners were selected by an independent jury from a short list of 42 initiatives representing best practices. The competition was one of four foreseen for the period 2003 to 2005, two of which will award eHealth initiatives, the other two rewarding eGovernment good practices. The winners are: - EVISAND, a virtual environment for healthcare in Seville, Spain; - SJUNET, a national information technology infrastructure for healthcare in Sweden; - COHERENCE, an information system for successful hospital restructuring in Paris, France; - NHS Direct, a national health service website in the UK. 'I congratulate the winners and the runners-up for their excellent applications. They all have great potential in meeting the win-win formula of eHealth: a more productive and efficient health service and better service to patients throughout Europe,' said EU Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, Erkki Liikanen.
