Professor Gerassimos Papadopoulos, a seismologist from Greece, has been named as the recipient of the 2002 Rammal Award. The award was created in memory of the Lebanese physicist Rammal Rammal, and is given each year to a scientist from one of the Mediterranean countries who, through their life and work, has contributed to scientific cooperation in the region. Besides his work and publications on seismicity and earthquake prediction, Professor Papadopoulos has led several international projects and, in particular, has established collaborative links between researchers in Greece and Turkey. He also heads up the Greek team within a large EU collaborative research project involving France, Italy, Greece and Spain. Currently Research Director at the institute of geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens, Professor Papadopoulos was the unanimous choice of the eight member selection panel.
