Introduction to the telematics programme
A brochure is now available introducing the RTD programme "Telematics Systems in Areas of General Interest". It explains the origin and aims of the programme, its management, the work already undertaken and the outlook for the future. The telematics programme, funded by the European Commission, comprises seven subprogrammes in areas which have a proven potential for the application of new technologies: - Exchanging information between European administrations; - Transport services; - Health care; - Flexible and distance learning; - Libraries; - Linguistic research and engineering; - Telematics systems for rural areas. The Commission's plan of research in these fields is based on the objectives and aspirations of trans-European infrastructures and networks for key services. It was drawn up in close consultation with national governments, industry and users. To date, the programme has succeeded in attracting both large and small suppliers of information and communications technologies, telecommunications network operators, universities, research centres and a wide range of smaller companies and user groups. These organizations cooperate in research to which they contribute 50% of the costs involved, before any commercial development of products and services takes place. In return, they benefit from the sharing of results, knowledge and expertise with European partners. A venture on such a scale would be impossible without EU support. The 29-page colour brochure "The Telematics Programme" is not intended as a reference document for the research community but instead explains the purpose of the programme and gives an overview of the subject areas, the potential of international cooperation in this field, and the contribution which telematics research makes to the shaping of the European Union.
