Linguistic research and Engineering (LRE) programme overview
A document now available from DG XIII provides an overview of the EU's programme of linguistic research and engineering (Area 6 within the specific programme of RTD in the field of telematic systems in areas of general interest). Language processing is a field with tremendous potential. It encompasses inter-related disciplines within information technology, sharing the common goal of processing written and spoken language. These range from the familiar word processing and text storage and retrieval to ambitious pursuits such as automatic translation, speech recognition, and handwriting recognition. The technologies vary in complexity and are therefore at different stages of advancement and commercial exploitation. Language research and engineering is part of a broad strategy to revitalize Europe's high-tech industries. This overview of the European Union's LRE research explains the actions the Commission is undertaking to bring new life to technologies in this field and their great potential in Europe.
