A total of 105 projects are described in the 1992 Annual Progress Report of the Community's specific research and development programme on radioactive waste management and storage - shared-cost action (1990-1994). Following a call for research proposals published in Official Journal No C 55 of 7.3.1990 to implement shared-cost research contracts with public organizations or private firms, 115 contracts were agreed for both Part A and Part B of the programme. This annual report presents, for all projects running in 1992, the objectives and scope, the overall research plan and a synopsis of the progress and results achieved. Part A of the publication covers the study of management systems, treatment and characterization of waste, general aspects of waste disposal and the safety of geological disposal systems. Part B deals with activities current to 1992 concerning the construction and operation of underground facilities in nominated geological media for disposal. The aim of the programme, which has a total Community funding of ECU 79.6 million over the five-year period 1990-1994, is to help foster the creation of a complete system of radioactive waste management that will ensure human safety and environmental protection, particularly in the disposal stage, through a reduction in the volume of waste, progress in containment, the development of deep geological storage repositories and an advance in quality assurance and control. In addition to shared-cost research contracts, the programme also includes study contracts, awards of training and mobility grants, as well as international cooperation agreements with states outside the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).
