SME TechWeb, the information service for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking European research funding, has been revamped to provide comprehensive support to smaller enterprises interested in the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). Hosted on CORDIS, the European Commission's Research and Development Information Service, SME TechWeb aims to help innovative SMEs by offering an overview of FP6 funding opportunities and the proposal submission process. At least 15 per cent of the budget for FP6's seven thematic priorities (approximately 1,700 million euro) is earmarked for smaller enterprises. SME TechWeb outlines the research opportunities that they offer to small firms and the special efforts being made to help SMEs take part in projects in these seven areas. A further 430 million euro has been allocated to horizontal research activities involving SMEs. Dedicated sections on both the cooperative research (CRAFT) and collective research schemes are provided on SME TechWeb. Information is also provided on economic and technological intelligence (ETI) activities. The service provides access to participation rules and documents, gives step-by-step advice on proposal submission and partner searches, and information on contractual issues. In addition, the service provides SME managers with an insight into previous research projects and success stories. A list of training opportunities and support contact points is given, including the SME 'helpline' and the local support network of National Contact Points (NCPs). Advice on the intellectual property rights of innovative SMEs is also given, and links to further assistance and information sources are provided. Innovative SME-related events and news are published regularly on the service, with a specific focus on the European Research Area (ERA) and the place of SMEs in FP6. Continuing to search for ways to improve its service, SME TechWeb also asks users to complete a short survey and to help shape the future of the site (see link below).
