The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Italian region of Lombardy have signed a framework collaboration agreement, which is intended to provide a model for other research centres and regions around Europe. The JRC has built up a network of collaborations, and has more than 150 partnership arrangements. The agreement with Lombardy will set in motion joint participation in research projects, the development of common analytical methods, the training of scientific and technical personnel, and the provision of support to policymakers at regional level. 'It is a pleasure to witness the signing of this agreement, as it is the culmination of an initiative launched by myself and President Formigoni [of the Lombardy region],' said EU Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin on 1 December. 'The JRC is an asset, not only for the European Commission, but also for the Lombardy region. In developing closer links across several scientific and technical areas, we are helping to promote and develop the regional dimension of the European Research Area [ERA]. It is also my hope that this agreement will serve as a model for other research and technology centres and regions across Europe.' Three of the JRC's seven institutes are located at Ispra in Lombardy, and they already offer a range of scientific expertise to the region in areas such as environment and health, air pollution, water and soil quality, agriculture and food, energy, risk assessment and the protection and use of land.
