Anne-Marie Moulin, a French philosopher and physician, has been named as the recipient of the 2003 Rammal Award.

The award was created in memory of the Lebanese physicist Rammal Rammal, and is given each year to a scientist from one of the Mediterranean countries who, through their life and work, has contributed to scientific cooperation in the region.

Dr Moulin has for a long time been very involved in Mediterranean studies. With her study of the history of medicine in the Arabic world, she demonstrated that the disparity between the purported golden age of Arabic sciences, which lasted until the 13th century, and its subsequent decline, was less significant than previously believed.

Dr Moulin has taught and organised various seminars and conferences on the history of science and medicine, and has published numerous studies. She is currently Director of Research at the Centre for demographic, economic and judicial studies (CEDEJ) in Egypt, and President of the board of administrators of the French national agency for research on AIDS (ANRS).
