Busquin launches operational phase of clinical trials programme in Senegal
EU Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin was in Senegal from 22 to 24 February to launch the operational phase of the 600 million euro 'European and developing countries clinical trials partnership' programme. The programme focuses on the three major poverty related diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. The research and clinical trials carried out under the programme will be funded equally by the European Commission, the EU Member States and industry, together with international donors. 'Research into treatments for diseases does not just mean working in laboratories; it also means working with the sick and infected in their own communities,' said Mr Busquin. 'By visiting Senegal, one of the exemplary countries in the fight against HIV/AIDS, I hope to highlight what the clinical trials programme means in real terms: European countries working in partnership with developing countries and the pharmaceutical industry to reduce suffering and poverty.' During his visit, Mr Busquin met African leaders, visited European and international organisations working in the field of poverty related diseases, African researchers, and their patients. The programme aims to develop new treatments adapted to local conditions, which are therefore more suitable for the African population than what is available currently. A substantial part of the EDCTP budget will go to Africa, and will be managed by African organisations.
